The Royal School for Deaf Children, Margate (founded 1792) is a Non Maintained School and College (Westgate College) (DfEE No 7017) which serves the South, South East and Midlands of England and the Channel Islands.
The Royal School provides day and residential pupils with a responsive, communicating, learning and interacting environment. Every pupil has opportunity for success, and is expected to learn and succeed to the best of their ability.
The Royal School is able to provide education for up to one hundred and sixty deaf pupils of either sex, who are aged from 4 to 16 years. Pupils may attend daily or residentially.
WESTGATE COLLEGE (The Royal School's Post 16 and Further Education Department) is able to provide educational training for up to a further 50 students of either sex, who are aged from 16-25 years.
All pupils and students at the school or college receive:
* Education with a Child Centred Communication (Bi-lingual) environment in which communication is based on pupil needs and includes: spoken language amplified by hearing aids: British Sign Language: Signed English or Signs Supporting English; or individually designed visual or tactile communication systems.
* Educational programmes which provide access to the National Curriculum and qualifications to recognise achievements.
* Successful communication with peers and adults to give them access to the National Curriculum.
* Education and training from trained and qualified Teachers of the Deaf and other staff who are specially trained and qualified to meet the needs of deaf children.
* Communication advice, guidance and education by the Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, Sign Language Instructor and Advisor on Communication.
* An acoustically treated educational and residential environment.
* Modern amplification systems to encourage spoken language. Audiological and otological oversight and availability of Audiological Technician for hearing aid repairs.
* Consultant Otologist (Ear, Nose and Throat) or other Surgeon or Consultant oversight.
* Education for success, confidence and pride as a day or residential pupil.
* Specialist Educational Psychological assessment, and educational assessment and advice is available from our range of specialist staff.
